Vietnamese radio drama aims to halt HIV, boost gender equality

Ha Noi, 27 March 2008 – The real lives of Vietnamese youth have been dramatized for the first-ever national radio soap series. The difficulties of communicating with parents, enduring domestic violence, living with HIV and much more come to life in Radio the Voice of Vietnam’s (VOV) The Desire of Life which hits the national airwaves on Sunday, 6 April. The soap opera is supported by UNFPA with funds from the Danish Government (DANIDA) and technical assistance from U.S.-based non-governmental organization Population Media Center (PMC).

Viet Nam must plan now for urban growth

Urbanization in Viet Nam is a reality and is fuelling economic, social and cultural development. According to UNFPA’s State of World Population 2007: Unleashing the Potential of Urban Growth, to take full advantage of the potential opportunities, Viet Nam must prepare for the coming growth in its urban population by developing a long term vision and implementing pre-emptive, pro-poor policies.

To encourage discussion on urbanization, the theme of this year’s annual report, the United Nations Country Team is hosting a Film Festival entitled Tales of the City. The ten films to be shown will highlight the challenges and opportunities of urban growth.

UNFPA and Vietnam celebrate 30 years of collaboration

1 Nov., 2007, Ha Noi - UNFPA will continue to support Viet Nam with its population and reproductive health challenges as long as necessary, UNFPA Deputy Executive Director Purnima Mane said, joining Viet Nam’s Health Minister to mark 30 years of cooperation at a celebration in Ha Noi.

Too many women still die giving life, global report shows

12, Oct., 2007 - Far too many women around the world are still dying giving life. New global figures released by WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA and The World Bank show that the world's maternal mortality ratio (the number of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births) is declining too slowly to meet Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 5, which aims to improve maternal health and prevent women from dying in pregnancy and childbirth.

Denmark and UNFPA support HIV radio drama

24 Jan., 2007 - Denmark and UNFPA Viet Nam agreed on 24 Jan 2007 to support Radio the Voice of Viet Nam in producing and broadcasting Viet Nam’s first serialised radio drama aimed at increasing HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention in the country in a three-year project.      More >>
