Village based ethnic minority midwives: a human resource solution for strengthening maternal and child health

Ha Noi, 23 April 2013 – The official role of ethnic minority midwives will be recognized in the Viet Nam's health system when the Ministry of Health's Circular 07 comes into effect in May  2013. This new Circular shows a strong commitment of the Government of Viet Nam in accelerating progress towards achieving the health-related MDGs and saving more women's and children's lives, emphasized the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the United Nations in Viet Nam at the workshop organized today in Ha Noi to launch the MOH's Circular 07 dated 8 March 2013 on requirements, functions and responsibilities of village health workers including village-based ethnic minority midwives. more

Strengthen multi-sectoral coordination mechanism among all relevant sectors and stakeholders from the national to grass-roots levels - key to ending domestic violence in Viet Nam

HA NOI, 12 April 2013 - "It is important to have greater synergy and coordination among all relevant sectors and stakeholders working to prevent and address domestic violence. Such a coordinated multi-sectoral response to domestic violence must be well planned and monitored. This will help to translate the national laws and legislation into actions, so that we can ensure that all those who suffer from and are at risk of domestic violence have access to quality health care, safety and protection measures, as well as effective legal services," emphasized Ms. Mandeep K. O'Brien, UNFPA Representative a.i. in Viet Nam at the consultative workshop on Multi-sectoral Coordination Mechanism and the Minimum Intervention Package for Domestic Violence Prevention and Control organized today in Ha Noi by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MOCST) and the UNFPA in Viet Nam.

Addressing emerging challenges of fertility decline: Key to maintaining the country's sustainable development

Ha Noi, 27 March 2013 - During the past 50 years, many East Asian countries have witnessed a remarkable decline in Total Fertility Rates (TFR) from a high level of 5 or more children per woman in the period 1965-1970 to below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman in the period 2005-2010. The countries where fertility declined need to foresee the consequences and start preparing for policy response to address the challenges of fertility decline. These key findings were presented today in Ha Noi at the workshop on “Sharing International Experience in Fertility Decline", co-organized by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Viet Nam.  more

Conference on Enhancing the Effectiveness of the Implementation of Vietnamese Youth Development Strategy 2011-2020

HA NOI, 28 November 2012 - The Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA) and the United Nations (UN) in Viet Nam organized a conference today in Ha Noi to discuss a multi-sectoral response to the effective implementation of the Vietnamese Youth Development Strategy for 2011-2020. The Strategy, which was officially approved by the Prime Minister in December 2011, provides a firm foundation for all sectors and ministries to jointly work on addressing young people's needs. more

  • Ethnic groups in Viet Nam
    The booklet analyses various indicators including age profiles, sex and marriage patterns; total fertility and mortality rates; levels of educational attainment and technical training, each by ethnicity withdrawing from publications generated from the 2009 Viet Nam Population and Housing Census, including the Completed Results, Major Findings1 and a series of the 2009 census monographs. Other indicators have been aggregated and calculated from the original data.

  • Youth Law and the Vietnamese Youth Development Strategy 2011-2020
    The Youth Law was promulgated by the National Assembly in 2005 and taken effect from 1st July 2006. This booklet was published by the Ministry of Home Affairs in coordination with other line agencies and UNFPA to introduce the Youth Law and the Vietnamese Youth Development Strategy 2011-2020.

    This booklet aims to provide a brief socio-economic profile of disability in Viet Nam based on the 15 per cent sample of the 2009 Viet Nam Population and Housing Census data. The specific objectives of this booklet are to (1) Provide a general picture of disability prevalence in Viet Nam; (2) Highlight the main demographic and socio-economic characteristics of PWD in comparison to that of persons without disabilities; (3) Provide disability-related policy implications.
