Hanoi, 11 September 2023: The new UNFPA Representative for Vietnam, Mr Matt Jackson and the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Youth Union, Mr. Bui Quang Huy met in Hanoi today to discuss ways to further facilitate their bilateral cooperation in promoting youth participation and supporting sexual and reproductive health for Vietnamese youth in particular rights and choices, gender equality, prevention of gender-based violence and preparation for ageing. Both organisations agreed on the importance of prioritising those furthest behind and hardest to reach including young people from ethnic groups, young people with disabilities and youth migrants.
They also signed a new Memorandum of Understanding between UNFPA Viet Nam and the Viet Nam Youth Union - a break-through in the partnership - which aims to further facilitate the partnership in promoting comprehensive youth development and participation, and increasing equitable and adolescent-friendly access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health information and services for vulnerable young people. Both parties confirmed their readiness to discuss a new 2023-2026 project proposal to achieve common goals
Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Matt Jackson said: “The close and reliable partnership between UNFPA and Viet Nam Youth Union over the past 28 years provides a solid foundation to deepen collaboration to further promote sexual and reproductive health for young Vietnamese people, particularly those hardest to reach. I believe that our strong partnership and common goals will deliver benefits for young people across Viet Nam.”
For his part, the leader of the Viet Nam Youth Union, Mr. Bui Quang Huy thanked UNFPA for its support to Viet Nam’s youth development over the past years. Mr. Bui Quang Huy confirmed that Viet Nam Youth Union always considers UNFPA an important partner. He added that, following the signing of this Memorandum of Understanding, Viet Nam Youth Union is looking forward to receiving UNFPA’s support not only in policy advocacy but also in translation of policy to actions to support comprehensive youth development in Viet Nam.
