Rapid population ageing in Viet Nam: Challenges and Opportunities

Publication

Viet Nam’s rapid population ageing continues and is expected to accelerate in the future. In recent decades, Viet Nam has made exceptional advances in population health. Mortality and fertility rates have plummeted and life expectancy at birth rose to 70.6 years for men and 76.0 for women in 2014. Together, these trends have led to a greater fraction of the total population comprised by seniors (60 years and above). While in 1990 seniors made up 7.2 per cent of the population, they accounted for 10 per cent in 2011, which marked the country’s entrance into its socalled “ageing phase”.

This report should be seen as a supplement, or 'Part 2', of the report "Keeping silent is dying" - Results from the National Study on Domestic Violence against Women in Viet Nam. The study intends to shed some more light on the reasons why in the same cultural context, some women experience more violence by their husbands than do others. This understanding should help the government design more effective interventions and develop necessary policies to address VAW in a more comprehensive manner.
