Kon Tum province, Viet Nam  - 4 June 2016. From 1 to 3/6/2016, UNFPA and the Ministry of Health had a joint mission to Kon Tum province to monitor the activities of maternal health and family planning; and provide recommendations on improving universal access to sexual and reproductive health and family planning for ethnic minority people in mountainous areas, particularly ethnic minority women and unmarried young people.

The delegation led by Ms. Astrid Bant, UNFPA Representative in Viet Nam and Mr. Nguyen Duc Vinh, Director of Maternal and Child Health Department, Ministry of Health. The delegation visited Tu Mo Rong district, a poor and hard-to-reach area. They met and talked with local leaders, health workers, village midwives, households, women and young people from ethnic groups to understand more the difficulties and challenges they are facing in accessing reproductive health care and family planning information and services.


On the last day of the visit, the delegation met and shared key findings from the trip to Ms. Tran Thi Nga, Vice Chairperson of Kontum Peoples' Committee. Ms. Astrid Bant appreciated the efforts of Kon Tum province over the past years to improve the health indicators for mothers and children. She also suggested the province to maintain the results achieved, and to allocate national funding to support trained village midwives and to promote quality of health care for women and children at the district and commune levels.
