Promulgated in 2006, the Law on Gender Equality has advanced Viet Nam's progress in family, social, and public spheres. However, 10-year and 15-year reviews exposed limitations, particularly the lack of focus on gender-based violence (GBV) and harmful practices. Notably, the Law defines neither term nor outlines government responses to these gender-discriminatory behaviors.

Recognizing these gaps, this policy brief synthesizes key issues on GBV and harmful practices in Viet Nam, drawing from international human rights standards and good practices. In doing so, it provides guidance for a stronger legislative, policy, and programmatic response to these critical issues. Furthermore, the brief presents crucial recommendations for the Vietnamese government to consider for Law revision.
