Viet Nam entered the golden population period in 2007, which is expected to end in 2036. This phase is characterized by the working-age population being twice the number of dependents (children under 15 and elderly people over 65). It is forecasted that in about 11 years, Viet Nam will enter an aging population phase.

Over the past two decades, the birth rate has declined, especially in urban areas with developed economies and high urbanization rates. The Southeast region currently has the lowest birth rate in the country, at only 1.48 children per woman. Ho Chi Minh City is also among the localities with the lowest birth rates nationwide.

The "Current Events & Commentary" program, with the topic "Population Strategy in the New Situation," features commentary from Ms. Phạm Thị Lan, Head of Population and Development at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Viet Nam.

"In fact, the decline in birth rates is not only occurring in Viet Nam but is also a global trend. According to calculations by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), two-thirds of countries worldwide are currently experiencing declining birth rates, leading to an increase in the elderly population. These are two sides of the same demographic issue, requiring special attention in the current context, both in Viet Nam and globally," Ms. Lan stated.
